Got Choy?

Listen to yo' momma… Choy is good for you.

Haha. Sweet. Every once in a while, i’ll get a remark or two about some of my pictures on my flickr portfolio, but there’s one picture in particular that seems to grab a lot of attention. I received a message from a wikipedian user sam916 telling me that my picture “SFO at Night” (titled quite literally) was nominated for 2006 Picture of the Year, and had become a finalist! (I didn’t win, but being top 10 was pretty cool!

Reading some of the comments from the contest was also rewarding in itself. Here are some of my favorites:

  • The SFO by night has been my wallpaper for months. Excellent picture.
  • The usual experience with airports such as SFO is full of stress. It’s great to take a step back (or above in this case) and look at a beautiful shot showing the elegant functional design.
  • This one has great technical application and educational use, and I’d be proud to have it in my portfolio.
  • Weil ich schon mal dort war und ihn selbst erlebt habe… (.. umm. yeah!)

Giving just a little bit of background, I took this photo while I was on a private cessna piloted by a gentleman who kindly asked me if I’d like to fly on his plane just for fun, on the condition that I send him my photos. He took me twice around the bay area… once during the day, and another during the night. The night shots were quite difficult and unfortunately 75% of my shots turned out not being presentable because of the lack of light and as well as the wind ripping through the cockpit cabin causing an unsteady shot (due to window opening and closing for each shot — that was kinda fun). I got lucky though, and this one came out quite nice. :)

If you’re interested, I’ve uploaded the complete set of shots on my flickr portfolio. [Bay Area Aerials]

Just when you thought CTS (carpal tunnel syndrome) of the thumbs caused by the repetitive stress of texting with a cell phone was weird and unusual… LG brings you The LG National Texting Championships! $25,000 grand prize to the person who has the quickest thumbs. I should register my entire 18′s girls volleyball team. At every opportunity, they have their phones by them, texting frantically as it were as much of a necessity to life as like water. But I digress…

Anyways, the catch to compete in such a famed event (right up there with American Idol)? You have to have an LG phone. Damn it. Guess I’m not going to Hollywood this year.

In a time of war and high alert, it’s consoling to know that we can still enjoy the luxuries that living the United States allows us… such as the brilliantly marketed “i-products” developed by Apple. Sometimes tho, don’t we feel that they go overboard with their “i-etc’s?” “i-this”… “i-that”… They’re gonna get into trouble one day…

(Thanks for the link Ray!)

BART (Bay Area Rapid Transit) just recently made an announcement that they will now be selling ad space in the tunnels of San Francisco. However, these are not your normal billboard advertisements. These ad’s will utilize the motion of the train to create a sort of ‘flip-book’ effect to generate motion. What they call “Motion Picture Advertising” has already debuted in the London Heathrow Express as you see in the clip…

Now they just need to remove the “No Food” signs so that we can bring the popcorn on board!

Just read this article on lifehacker.com which can apply to all of us who want to save an extra few cents on that next big purchase we want… like that new tv. Next time you’re at some retail store, try this trick out:

It boils down to being a good negotiator, though the tactics seem somewhat shady (but I’m a total wimp in the negotiation room, so you may feel otherwise). You indicate that you’re interested in buying a big fat warranty, then ask the sales assistant to lower the item’s price. Since big box electronics stores are often pushed to sell warranties, they’ll be willing to budge on the price of your item – especially if it’s got a big price tag. Then when checkout time comes, you have a change of heart on the warranty. Simple enough.

It may not work if your salesperson was also the same person at the register, but I wish I thought about this last time I went to Fry’s Electronics! Brilliant!
